Thillu Mullu

Thillu Mullu – With the remake of Thillu Mullu to be released in two weeks I thought of writing the review on the original. The original is a 1981 Tamil comedy film which was a remake of Golmaal in Hindi. The plot is about a playful youngster who enacts as a straight forward young man with strong ideology, ambition and family values to impress his boss. However things take a turn when he bunks work on the pretext of a medical emergency to watch a football match and his boss sees him at the stadium. Now to escape from losing his job and his good will he tells his boss that he has a look alike twin brother who is actually a playful youngster and the only difference between him and his brother is his brother does not sport a mustache while he has. The rest of the movie is about how hard he struggles to maintain this lie with his boss.

This is the first full length comedy movie of Rajinikant. Director Balachandar had got the best of out him in this movie. Rajinikant was able to showcase his versatility in acting. The movie itself is a laugh riot right from the beginning till end with some hilarious dialogues written by Visu. You can watch this movie any number of times and still laugh to your heart’s content. If you haven’t watched it, then you should pick a DVD and watch this.

The Gods Must be Crazy – Part II

The Gods Must be Crazy – Part II – Very rarely you see a sequel of a block buster which matches up to the expectation of the previous one. This one definitely meets the expectations and yet again a rib tickler. Xi is having 2 kids who out of their curiosity get on board a travelling water tanker used by elephant poachers. Xi is on a quest to get his kids back. In parallel a zoologist and a lawyer get stuck in the Kalahari desert after a plane crash and are trying to get out. There are also two soldiers fighting against each other stranded on the dessert. All the incidents contribute in making the movie a laugh riot again. Humor takes precedence over satirical messages in the second one. You end up admiring the naive and beautiful life of the native bushman tribe and their deep knowledge of nature… its gift, its perils and how to co-exist with nature without disrupting it.

The Gods Must be Crazy – Part I

The Gods Must be Crazy – Part I –  A South African comedy film released in 1980, which revolves around the life of Xi who is part of the Bushman tribe. From the busy materialistic city life where enough is never enough the movie switches over to Kalahari Dessert where the Bushman tribe is happy and content with what they have got and are very thankful to the almighty. Their lives take a turn when a empty coke bottle falls from the sky (from a flying plane). They think this is another boon from God however this brings in envy, jealousy, violence within the tribe which they haven’t experienced before… as there is only one of it. Xi takes on a mission to destroy it by taking it to end of the earth and giving back to the Gods. The movie is about his journey and the kind of incidents he finds himself in through out his journey is rest of the movie. It is one of the hilarious movies I had ever seen and it guarantees ROFL. This is first of the series… There is also a very satirical take on the city life where people live in excess and are still not content with what they have got…. you would start appreciating what nature has given you once you see this movie…

Must Watch – ROFL Guaranteed

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – Ayan Mukerji’s movie after his critically acclaimed Wake up Sid is a feel good entertainer. In his previous movie he has used the plot and the story line to move things however in his new outing he has relied heavily upon  on the star value of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The movie is a package of well blended commercial elements of love, friendship, father son relationship, sentiments. There is never a dull moment in the movie which makes it a pleasant watch… but there is something missing on the whole when compared to Wake Up Sid, probably as I had said too much reliance on the star value of the lead actors might be the one. In the end it turns out to be a typical movie from the K Jo’s banner which keeps you entertained throughout. If you are in mood for a feel good romantic movie you would enjoy this.

PS: I had read some reviews with comparison to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Chahta Hai… I would strongly recommend you not to do that as that would set your expectations very high and might disappoint you… Just go an watch it with an open mind 🙂

David (Hindi)

David (Hindi) – The movie begins with 3 persons with the same name “David” on the verge of doing something destructive that would end a life, friendship and relationship. The only difference is the first David’s story is set in 1975, the next ones in 1999 and the last ones in 2010. Coincidentally the date of the incident remains the same. The story then rewinds back in life of each of them and take us through the incidents that had bought them to this juncture. The movie is quiet engaging in particular the story of the first two played by Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vinay Virmani. The shots have been taken picture perfect and the editing is done very well. The third story in which Vikram plays David seems to be too weak for a movie plot and is in sharp contrast to the other two. However the other two make up for it. All the lead characters have done very well. Kudos to the director for screening the 1975 story in black and white. It is so pleasant to watch the black and white sequences which concentrates on the depth of the story with some brilliant lighting and cuts off the unwanted details which might have conveyed in color. If you like movies like Amores Perros, Yuva where the plot is built around incidents and does not have an ultimate goal which it leads to, then you would like this movie. Or else this may not interest you.

David (Tamil)

David (Tamil) – The movie begins with two people by the same name David at different time periods trying to take a step that would lead to destruction of life, friendship and relationship. The only difference is the time period, each of the incident is 11 years apart but the same date. The movie rewinds back in each of their life to take us through the incidents that had lead them to do this and what is the ultimate decision they take. Jiva and Vikram have done their roles as David very well. The story of Vikram seem to be very weak as a plot and the director has struggled to build up the incidents that would make the audience connect while the story of Jiva is quiet engaging. At the end of the movie it leaves you with a incomplete feeling. The completeness is in the Hindi version where there is 3rd David whose story is much earlier to these two. If you are keen in this movie then I would recommend you to watch the Hindi Version. You can read the review here

Looper

Looper – A sci fi movie which deals with time travel. In 2074 criminal organization send the people who they wanted to be killed, back to 30 years in the past. They get hunted down by a group called looper. A looper retires when he kills his self from the past and is rewarded with gold to enjoy his retirement life for the next 30 years. Things get complicated when Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) meets his self from the future and lets him escape without being able to kill.  The movie is slow till the point where Joe lets his future self escape. From then on it turns into a racy thriller leaving the audience guessing what the end outcome would be. But for the initial slow paced script the rest of the movie is definitely engaging. As we had seen many movies with time travel and concepts like Inception this may not strike very unique but still a must watch film.

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga – A watchable comedy flick. Pandiraj has tried to convey a message for the newer generation combined with some above average humour. This has a flavor of middle class drama what you would have seen in erst while Visu movies and then later with V Sekar’s movies. Siva Karthikeyan has done his part very well. Vimal’s acting seems to be getting stereotyped with his previous movies. He should start trying to do something different. Overall it is a watchable flick that will make you laugh in parts.

Blades of Glory

Blades of Glory – American Comedy movie released in 2007. The plot is about two skillful ice skaters who get into tie for the gold in Winter Olympics. They end up fighting on the podium which results in them getting banned for life from taking part in the men’s single skating title. Their life turns into a mess. An old time coach uses the loopholes in the rules of the ban and tries to get them back into the game and the only chance they have to rebuild their career is by pairing with each other and becoming the world’s first ever same sex pair and compete for the pair skating. It makes an interesting watch due to its non-conventional plot and they have made a decent movie out of the simple plot. The scenes flow into each other well and builds up to the climax. The scenes in the skating rink has been shot very well. It has the typical drama elements of any average comedy movie. As I said it is watchable for the unique plot and good performances by Will Ferrell and John Hedder.

Rise of the Guardians

Rise of the Guardians – An out and out movie for kids. It has all the fairy tale characters Santa, Sandman, Jack Frost, Tooth Fairy, Bunny and Boogy man who had featured in many stories told to kids. They have created a neat little story using all these characters. Keeping faith in good things will help you ward off evil is an excellent message to pass on to the kids with all their favorite characters. Go for it for the kid in you!

Sundarapandian

Sundarapandian – A run of the mill commercial entertainer. There is nothing special or unique about the movie. The narration style is very simple, funny in parts and stays  on track of the plot without wavering too much. Local bus travel is plays a prominent part in the movie. For those of you who had extensively traveled in public bus during your school and college days this might bring back some nostalgic memories. If you want to watch a movie without having to think too much then this one might keep you engaged.

Seven Psychopaths

Seven Psychopaths – A crime comedy which revolves around a struggling screenplay writer who is looking for inspirations to complete his screenplay. Very soon he is entangled into the crime world as he along with his friend decides to write on real experiences of Psychopaths. Their quest turns into an adventure which turns the life of everyone of them involved. Very interesting plot but it gets too complicated. It becomes very difficult to keep track of the story line after a while and you end up trying to attach things together constantly. The narration is stylish and if you love dark comedy movies then you might enjoy this. I am giving this a rating of Wait for DVD/TV as you would be able to enjoy the script better when you watch at home.
