Rise of the Guardians

Rise of the Guardians – An out and out movie for kids. It has all the fairy tale characters Santa, Sandman, Jack Frost, Tooth Fairy, Bunny and Boogy man who had featured in many stories told to kids. They have created a neat little story using all these characters. Keeping faith in good things will help you ward off evil is an excellent message to pass on to the kids with all their favorite characters. Go for it for the kid in you!

Sundarapandian

Sundarapandian – A run of the mill commercial entertainer. There is nothing special or unique about the movie. The narration style is very simple, funny in parts and stays  on track of the plot without wavering too much. Local bus travel is plays a prominent part in the movie. For those of you who had extensively traveled in public bus during your school and college days this might bring back some nostalgic memories. If you want to watch a movie without having to think too much then this one might keep you engaged.

Soodhu Kavvum

Soodhu Kavvum – Its encouraging to see new directors handling good slap stick comedy script. After Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, Soodhu Kavvum is successful in tickling your funny bones… Vijay Sethupathi has done a very good job and Kudos to the new director for doing such a script. If you are in a mood for slap stick comedy this one is recommended.

Bombay Talkies

Bombay Talkies – A perfect bouquet of four stories from four great film makers of the present… It’s a tribute to 100 years of Indian Cinema. It is anecdotes of lives of people, their challenge and how they deal with it… All the directors have dealt with subject which they wouldnt have dealt with in their mainstream cinema… So what is so Bollywood about it… Well it needs some reflection 🙂 Bollywood is integral part of all their lives… Leaves you with the feeling how the on screen artists impact everyday life… A laudable attempt… Due to its lack of commercial elements it might appeal only to serious movie goers and multiplex audience… If you like great stories and not bothered with star values and gimmicks… This one is for you…

Hitchcock

Hitchcock – an engaging drama on the life of Hitchcock and his relationship with his wife during the making of one of his greatest epic Psycho. Well written screenplay and you feel yourself being part of the sets, the public and Hitchcock’s household during the making of the movie… Antony Hopkins has done a wonderful job of bringing Hitchcock to life. If you are a Hitchcock fan, movie buff or interested in biopic this one is highly recommended…

Must Watch – For Movie Buffs

Kadal

Kadal – Very philosophical, the movie’s promotion has spoilt its box office run. Audience had come to the theaters expecting a breezy romantic drama like Alaipayuthe but ended watching a soul searching story and a fight between the Evil and the Good in one’s self and how love helps in overcoming the evil in thyself. Maniratnam and Rajiv Menon have made you live in a fisherman colony…The movie is not everyone… if you go with a open mind Kadal might be inspiring…

Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas – Brilliant story about how the liberation of individuals from their current crisis are inspired by the actions of individuals in the past present and future. The directors have stuck to non linear narration to narrate stories in six different eras. It is complicated and tests the ability of the audience to keep track of multiple things… Felt the makers could have reduced the non linear narration to some degree. But this is hard to make…. If you are a fan of complicated movies with non linear narration style you would love this or else you find it to be a waste of time…

Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher – Movie based on the book One Shot by Lee Child. Five shots on one target and a undoubted suspect arrested… When the police think there is nothing much left in the case Jack Reacher sees what others haven’t… The rest of the movie is about how he unravels the mystery… It’s a bit slow for a Tom Cruise starrer… The script demands some serious watching unlike the MI series… However some of the antics added for Tom Cruise fans looks out of place for the plot… Despite the slowness it makes a watchable flick but not a memorable one… Watch it for Jack Reacher there might be more of the series coming up…

Dabangg 2

Dabangg 2 – A predictable sequel to Dabangg recreates magic in parts…. It’s very difficult to make sequel of a blockbuster as there is always a confusion on what to retain and what to leave from the previous version… What worked for Arbaaz is retaining the masala cop image of Robin Hood Pandey and his ways of fighting the baddies… But where he struggled is not able to leave back the characters of Pandeyji’s family… They seem to be an excess baggage for the movie… If you have liked Dabangg and are in for a masala movie where logic doesn’t apply… You won’t be disappointed….

Life of Pi

Life of Pi – its difficult to convert a literature with a philosophical theme into a successful screenplay… Ang Lee and team has done the best in bringing Pi ‘s magical journey to life… From the French influenced Pondicherry, the perilous storm in the ocean, the serene ocean life all captured and represented very beautifully… Not sure if the deep philosophical reflection would please the movie audience looking for commercial entertainment… It’s definitely worth a watch and you will enjoy it more when you entrench yourself in Pi’s quest for the Supreme…

Thuppaki

Thuppakki – overloaded with entertainment… Murugadoss doesn’t fail to entertain the audience with a different plot and storyline… He could have avoided the unnecessary scenes added to please vijay fans… The bold move he had done with Vijayakanth in Ramana worked wonders… He should believe in this more… Having said that… but for the dragging songs and few scenes the movie is worth a watch…!
