The Lego Movie

The Lego Movie – is an English animation movie released in 2014.  Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary worker in a construction site who goes about living his life as per the books, falls into a situation where he would need to break the rules to save the world from freezing.

I should confess that I never thought I would like this movie as I had not been a major fan of animation using Lego toys. Hence my expectation was super low for this one. However this movie turned out to outrun my expectation. Although it appears to be a spoof of many Hollywood movies and characters there is a very deep social message in it with respect to upbringing of kids. Of course the message targets towards increase in sales of Lego toys 🙂 Still this is a must watch for all animation movie fans.

3 Days to Kill

3 Days to Kill – is a French American action thriller released in 2014.The movie is about an experienced CIA agent who discovers he is going to live only for few months and wants to patch up with his wife and daughter but gets involved in a high pressure CIA assignment.

The movie has a tone of Taken. However the plot and the subject it deals with are different of a CIA agent balancing between work and life. Kevin Costner has played the role of experienced CIA agent and his performance of balancing act between a talented CIA agent and wanna be family man attending to his teenage daughter and wife. The movie sticks to this theme, the conflicts around it and moves along. The movie is not an out and out gripping thriller like Taken. If you are expecting Taken you would be disappointed but if you are able to appreciate the subject this one deals with you would enjoy the movie. Give it a shot.

Arima Nambi

Arima Nambi – is a Tamil Action Thriller released in 2014. Aravind meets Anamika at a bar and they go out on a date but in the same night Anamika is kidnapped and Aravind is on the run to find her but soon he realizes that they are in a larger trap and become fugitives for gangsters and police.

Arima Nambi is seemed to be inspired from many movies with fugitive genre. The lead actors are fugitives with unknown people chasing them. Over and above they are also charged for a murder they haven’t committed. Vikram Prabhu has yet again chosen the genre of action thriller and has performed well. The screenplay is racy and also some of the locations chosen for the movie are very good. The plot however has a lot of loop holes. Some of the scenes are unreal including the first song showing Chennai Hard Rock Cafe serving beer 🙂 If you are willing to ignore all these then you would enjoy this movie.

Yaamirukka Bayamey

Yaamirukka Bayamey – is a Tamil horror comedy movie released in 2014. Kiran is good at cheating people and making money. He is chased by a local goon for cheating his son. At this time he learns that his actual father has left him a big villa as a property. He resurrects the villa and converts it to a hotel with the help of Sharath who had been taken care by Kiran’s father. However they find that any guest staying in the hotel overnight dies.

The movie is an attempt on horror comedy genre. The end product has come out in a decent way. The flash back sequences in the movie have been taken well and has been widely appreciated by the audience. The first forty minutes of the screenplay is bit of a drag. If you are able to sit through that you would be able to enjoy the rest of the movie. Don’t expect too much chills and thrills… the movie is a light and easy watch and can be watched at home

Un Samayal Arayil

Un Samayal Arayil – is a Tamil romance drama released in 2014. This is a remake of Malayalam hit movie Salt N’ Pepper. Kalidasan is a food lover and an archaeologist. He is still unmarried in his early 40s. An accidental phone conversation brings him and Gowri a dubbing artist together and they find a soul mate in each other through their common interest in food. But they are hesitant to meet each other in personal with a fear of being rejected.

The movie is unique that it uses the love for food bringing about love between two persons. The first half of the movie is very engaging and you tend to fall in love with its lead characters. However a major part of the second half the movie is distracted by focusing more on the second set of characters and with two songs for them is a drag. The movie again gets on track when it starts focusing on the main characters and food. Ilayaraja’s music, performances of Prakashraj and Sneha and tasty food is a big plus for the movie. Drag in the second half screenplay and non-related locations to relate to audiences across states are few things which would make you bored. Overall this dish is good for Take Out.

Mundaasupatti

Mundaasupatti – is a Tamil comedy film released in 2014. In a fictitious village Mundaasupatti the residents are very superstitious and due to some past incidents believe that taking the photograph of a person would cause the death of the person and are against taking photographs of any person alive. A photographer from a near by town falls in love with the daughter of the village head of Mundaasupatti. Was he successful is the plot of Mundaasupatti.

Director Ram has taken the concept he has shot for his short film in Nalaya Iyakunnar and made it into a full length feature film. It is very risky to expand a short film into a full length feature film. However Ram has done a good job in adding some entertaining elements to the script which makes the movie a good time pass watch. The middle portion of the movie is bit dragging which could have been avoided and it would have made a good 90 minute feature film. As it is a period based subject the costume design plays a very important part in the movie which has given very comic tone to the package. Overall the movie is definitely worth a watch for its creative plot.

Naan Sigappu Manithan

Naan Sigappu Manithan – is a Tamil action thriller released in 2014. A person affected with Narcolepsy is out to take revenge.

Director Thiru once again proves he is good at the characterization of the lead character in the movie. As in Thimiru the lead character played by Vishal is interesting and is built very well. Vishal is affected by narcolepsy and the first half is all about him trying to lead a normal life. It is thoroughly enjoyable and in the middle he is faced with a situation where he would need to take revenge. Now the unfolding of this mystery is where the screenplay has weakened and it makes a lengthy second half that is interesting only in parts. Vishal’s performance is good and all the other characters by default assume that he is the hero in the movie and has given him the space which becomes very evident in the second half and makes it too predictable. Overall you can watch this when played on TV or DVD.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

The Grand Budapest Hotel – is a English comedy film released in 2014. The movie revolves around the adventure of Mr. Gustave, concierge of the Grand Budapest Hotel and Zero, the Lobby Boy.

I did not have great expectations before I watched this movie. I was in for a very pleasant surprise. The movie starts off with switching multiple time context from the present to 1968 and then to 1932 where the actual incidents of a story take place. The movie is presented in a Novel format and narrates the incidents surrounding the Grand Budapest hotel, its concierge and the lobby boy. Wes Anderson has got a very good cast ensemble and the shots covering various sequences around the Grand Budapest hotel and the fictitious town of Zubrowka. One of the things impressed me was use of fantastic visuals for the establishing shots to cover the context of movie. You would have the satisfaction of finishing a novel by the end of it.

Vaayai Moodi Pesavum

Vaayai Moodi Pesavum – is a Tamil comedy drama released in 2014. The movie plot revolves around the fact that humans have taken their ability to speak and communicate for granted. Either they do not use it properly or they use it to speak unnecessary stuff. The message is conveyed in the backdrop of a fictitious town names Pani Malai where there is a serious disease spreading which takes away the ability for people to communicate. The protagonist has an aspiration to become a radio jockey which is put in jeopardy when there is a law passed which prevents people from speaking.

The movie is very notable for its different story line. The plot is very simple and cute to outline the importance of speech for humans and how they keep wasting the valuable gift by over using it or not using it. As it is a very simple concept the movie it does not warrant the length it currently has. The director has taken a huge risk by not having dialogues for a large portion of the second half. Despite the length, the movie works for the plot and the humor it carries. This one deserves a watch for the different attempt and creative plot. I personally liked this better than Balaji Mohan’s previous Kadhalil Sodhappuvathu Eppadi.

Vadacurry

Vadacurry – is a Tamil thriller released in 2014. A novice medical representative gets into trouble when he gets a iPhone that had been misplaced by someone else.

The movie had a promising promo but the screenplay and execution is a big letdown. Hardly there are entertaining and engaging parts in the story. The screenplay is a mash up of sequences that are far related to each other. The director has created multiple characters and fails to utilize them in the movie. Like that of his brother, sister in law and their daughter hardly have any role to play. During the establishing sequence these are the characters that are stressed upon. The characters in the establishing phase are different from those in the buildup phase who are different from those in the climax. Overall you can skip this one as this has very little to offer.

Kochadaiiyaan – The Legend (3D)

Kochadaiiyaan – is a historic film made in many Indian languages employing performance capture technology. Rana runs away from his city at a very small age. He is adopted by the citizens of Kalingapuri , grows into a very talented soldier and eventually becomes the Commander in Chief for the kingdom. However Rana’s past forces him to act against the interests of Kalingapuri. What was it about his past and how Rana handles it is the story of Kochadaiiyaan.

It has been a much awaited movie from Superstar Rajnikanth. It is also the first ever full length Indian movie made using performance capture technology. The real hero of the movie is KS Ravikumar. He has created a very compelling story line tailor made for Rajnikanth. The story keeps you engaged throughout the movie.  Rajnikanth proves he is much beyond technology. His voice is a big plus for the movie. AR Rahman has created very soulful music that suits the story line. The major let down is the visuals. Of course all of us understand that it is hard to make a movie of this sort given the quick timeline with a shoe string budget. If you take that out the product finish is not something you would remember. They could have still done better in many places. First and foremost is the lack of data for pupil and eye lash movement of the characters is an issue. The color palette they have used to render the scenes is very inconsistent. You would see some bright visuals for songs but rest of the scenes are dull. The third important factor they haven’t given much thought is for the materials (like the terrain, walls, objects) used for the environment. These make it look like a 3D cartoon animation movie you had watched 15 years ago. However you would see moments of brilliance in certain scenes, in particular the stunt scenes have been done very well. They have really done a good job with the character that resurrects Nagesh on to the screen. Despite the short comings the screenplay of the movie, Rajni’s voice and AR Rahman’s music would entertain you and keep you glued to the seat. Kochadaiiyaan is a good attempt to start a trend towards performance capture technology. If it is used in a proper manner it could create wonders for Indian Cinema and enable us to make movies which are very difficult to make otherwise. Spending a good amount of time in the pre-production stage is very vital to make a good movie. If our Indian film makers concentrate on this department they would be able to make movies that could compete with many western movies in production quality.

Overall Kochadaiiyaan is worth a watch if you are not going with a mindset of experiencing a visual treat. If you are able to look beyond the shortcoming of the visuals – the story, actors and music would be a treat for you.

Watchable – for the first time effort, brilliant story line, music and of course for Superstar.

Vallinam

Vallinam – is a Tamil sports movie based on basketball released in 2014. Krishna decides to quit basketball after losing his close friend in an inter college tournament. When he moves to Chennai to pursue his studies, he is pushed into a situation to lead the college basketball team to win one of the biggest inter-college championships.

Director Arivazhagan has been bold enough to take up a sports movie after his success with Eeram. The movie opens with a very promising note and gets you prepared for an exciting game. However the romance sequence which has been forcefully fitted into the movie drags down the pace of the script. He could have totally avoided this. The movie is brilliant when the sports events are covered. He could have concentrated more on the sport rather than getting distracted. Given that basketball may not be the most popular game in India, going through the various rules and situations in the game would have been very interesting and would have given a lot of scope to make the final game very interesting.  Sabu Joseph’s editing has been brilliant for all the basketball scenes and the national award is well deserved. There is a very strong message for people aspiring to get into sports. Overall Vallinam is a predictable game with lot of unwanted commercial breaks. You could watch it on TV.
